 Radio on the Road: TIS and HAR Radio

     Low power Traveler Information Stations (TIS) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) stations have been around for more than thirty years. Thousands of such stations serve local communities as emergency broadcast stations for weather-related emergencies and tourist information and are run by municipalities or state governments around the US. They also present interesting DX targets for AM band DXers.

2014 Dayton Hamvention® Recap

     Few amateur radio events come near the appeal of the annual Dayton Hamvention, held since 1952 by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA). It is a 62-year legacy in the annals of electronic communication, a community for tens of thousands of dedicated amateur radio enthusiasts as well as shortwave listeners and scanner monitors. Former Monitoring Times publisher, Bob Grove W8JHD, was there and sends this report.

Titanium Satellite’s Big Dish Mover

     Free-to-Air (FTA) satellite-TV in North America is a booming hobby. With dozens of C and Ku-band satellites broadcasting hundreds of channels of interesting programming from around the world, FTA hobbyists have been missing most of the action. C-band FTA reception requires a big dish and inexpensive FTA receivers aren’t up to the task of moving them. Now, there’s an alternative.
